Known as the “Garden Spot of Colorado,” Berthoud is a town located around 50 miles north of Denver, along Colorado’s Front Range Urban Corridor. The town encompasses roughly 12 square miles, straddling the border between the counties of Larimer and Weld.
Berthoud began as a small settlement in a strategic location for the Colorado Central Railroad. After its tracks were established through the valley in 1877, a water tank, depot, and section house were built in the area. Originally known as Little Thompson, the settlement was renamed Berthoud for Edward Berthoud, who surveyed the route along the valley. Over the years, the settlement grew, doubling in size in 1886 after the Welch Addition, extending its borders south past present-day Mountain Avenue.
Today, Berthoud is a town that continues to grow while still managing to preserve its rural charm.
