It is the county seat and the most populous municipality in Larimer County, home to more than 164,000 residents. Fort Collins covers a total land area of roughly 57 square miles.

Fort Collins originally functioned as a military outpost for the US Army in 1864. It followed a previously established encampment known as Camp Collins, which is located close to present-day Laporte. The town was platted 1867, and officially became the county seat of Larimer the following year.
